Packing for Ireland Sounds Easy…Until You Get There

Double Rainbow, West Cork

Every year, people arrive thinking they’ve packed perfectly, and within a few hours, they’re cold, wet, or wondering why their feet feel like they’ve walked through a sponge. Ireland’s weather has a personality of its own. It can change faster than you can finish a cup of tea. So before you zip up that suitcase, here are three packing mistakes you’ll want to avoid.

1. Thinking one jacket will solve everything.

Yes, bring a rain jacket. But Ireland doesn’t just do rain, it does wind, mist, sunshine, and then rain again… sometimes all in the same afternoon. Layers are your best friend. And make at least one of them waterproof — not just for your top half. Wet jeans are not a travel highlight.

2. Packing your favorite sneakers.

They may look great at the airport, but cobblestone streets, muddy paths, and the occasional bog will have the last word. Bring waterproof shoes or light hiking boots. Your feet will thank you. And please… leave the wellies at home unless you’re planning to herd sheep. They’re not made for walking miles.

3. Forgetting sunscreen and sunglasses.

This one surprises people. Yes, Ireland has clouds. But when the sun comes out, it means business. More than a few travelers have ended a beautiful day exploring with a very un-Irish souvenir, a bright red sunburn.

The truth is, packing for Ireland isn’t about packing more. It’s about packing smart. A few layers, dry feet, and a little sunscreen can make the difference between just visiting Ireland and truly enjoying every minute of it.
