Waterford Crystal

Waterford Crystal Factory

Many people around the world have heard of Waterford Crystal, although most are not familiar with its exact nature. Crystal may resemble glass at first glance, and while it is created similarly, it has many special characteristics that set it apart from ordinary glass. Lead oxide is added to the mix, accounting for anywhere from 11 to 33 percent of the crystal's composition. It is this addition that gives crystal its ability to refract light when cut into facets, its heft, and the pleasing bell-like tone it produces when you flick it with your finger. The crafting of Irish crystal had been passed down through generations for centuries. While there are many crystal manufacturers in Ireland, including Galway Crystal and Cork Crystal, the most well-known is Waterford Crystal. Waterford Crystal has made many historic pieces, including the ball which is dropped in New York for New Year’s.

The ball was initially introduced in 2008. It is 12 feet in diameter and weighs 11,875 pounds. The Waterford ball is covered with 2,688 Waterford crystal panels that vary in size and range in length from 4.75 inches to 5.75 inches per side. It’s illuminated by a stunning 32,256 LEDs, resulting in an incredible glow that lights up Times Square. The Ball is capable of displaying a palette of more than 16 million vibrant colors and billions of patterns that create a spectacular kaleidoscope effect atop One Times Square.

Today, visitors in Ireland can attend a tour of the Waterford Crystal factory in the heart of Waterford city. While many of the more common pieces are made in other factories, all unique or custom pieces are made in the Waterford factory. These pieces have included jewelry and Super Bowl trophies. The tour guides visitors through the entire crystal-making process, from raw materials to the finished product. If you find yourself in Waterford, this tour is a must-see event.
